Although rabbits can utilize diets low in fibre and high in DE efficiently, decreasing dietary fibre which is usually accompanied by an increase in starch intake, results in an increase in digestive disturbances. A minimum intake of fibre is indispensable for good digestive function. Even with this minimum intake, digestive troubles can develop if starch intake is too high. Equilibrium between good performance and good health necessitates a need to define not only a minimum fibre intake but also amaximum starch intake. Research on this subject is reviewed.
