The expansion of the EU to include UK and Ireland made intensification of French sheep production difficult. This situation was aggravated by the CAP reform which supports systems that are less intensive. This study demonstrates the special character of extensive farms located in the midst of a group of large meat sheep farms in Montmorillonnais (an unfavoured zone south of Vienne, France). The three main factors influencing farm results are margin per ewe, work productivity and infrastructure costs.
