We start off our Plough Power special with an article that looks at the cause and effect of soil compaction from the weight of machinery. Farmers talk all the time about tillage pans as clear evidence of structural degradation in the sub-tillage layer. The problem is always evident because of the visible contrast between soft soil in the tilled zone and hard soil in the non-tilled layer immediately beneath it. Sometimes the effects are obvious such as in 'right angle' root disease. Farmers can startwith cause and effect. As surely as the tillage implement loosens the tilled zone, it doesn't touch the sub-tillage layer.
