The artificial infection of ears by F. culmorum at the full flowering stage (S1) resulted in ear and seed infection levels of 57.3 and 67.0%, respectively (average of 2 years). The infection of ears at the full flowering stage and end of flowering stage (S2), and the infection of ears at S2 and seed maturity stage (S3) had slight effects on ear infection. Ear treatment with Caramba 60 SL [metconazole] at 1.5 litre/ha at one day before ear infection at the full flowering stage reduced the infection of the ear surface by F. culmorum by 78.8-94.6%. Such treatment increased the 1000-seed-weight over the control by 21-25% under S1, and by 31-41% under S2 and S3. The chemical protection of ears reduced the infection of seeds by 4- to 7-fold..
