A six-year study (1999-2004) on variability of weed population in field pea (P. sativum) was carried out in Poland in a crop rotation: sugarbeet (on manure)-maize-spring barley-pea-winter rape-winter wheat, and in an increasing 7- to 12-year monoculture of field pea. Two weed control systems were compared: 0 (without herbicide) and H (with herbicide) protection (Topogard [terbuthylazine] 50 WP). The average number of weeds in the unprotected condition was 275 units/m2 in crop rotation and 704 units/m2 in monoculture, while in those treated with herbicide 36 units/m2 and 202 units/m2, respectively. The applied herbicide caused a decrease in number of weeds by 78.3% in crop rotation, and by 71.4% in monoculture..
