Now, the case management field has to take on the next part of the battle: workforce readiness. From the aging of the workforce to the changing practice environment, challenges abound. If we do not take on this issue, we will face the possibility of not having enough qualified, board-certified case managers to fulfill the need created by the legislative and quality initiatives. Without a talent pool of qualified professionals, the desired outcomes and goals of these initiatives may not be realized.Therefore, the entire field—from the Commission as a certifying body to individual practitioners—must raise the profile of case management as an advanced practice within health and human services. Through certification, these professionals demonstrate that they possess the knowledge and competency to fulfill essential care coordination roles in existing and emerging models of care, with an emphasis on a patient-centered approach.
