EFFECT OF PLANTING DENSITY AND NUTRITION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BANANA VARIETIES

The investigations on the effect of plant density and fertilizer levals on growth and yied of two varieties of banana were carried out at Regional Research Station, Brahmavar, during 1985-83, The variety Robuna has yielded 27.89 t/ha. Planting of twosuckers per hole has recorded higher yield/ha, but bunch weight and number of fruits per bunch were less compared to single tucker/hole. The progressive incseasc in yield from 19,26 to 28.03 t/ha was recorded with increase in NPK levels from 90: 54; 110,NPK, g/plant to 270:162:330 NPK, g/plant. The highest bunch yield of 37,97 t/ha was recorded in variety Robusta with two sucker/hole at highest level of fertilizer (260: 162: 330 NPR, g/plant). The highest level of fertilizer also reduced the number ofdays required for the fruit to reach maturity in both single and double suckers planting.
