Converging evidences including genetic study have supported the hypofunction hypothesis of glutamatergic neurotransmission through the N-methyl-D-aspartate-type glutamate receptor in schizophrenic brains (Kazuo et al., 2005). D-serine is an endogenous ligand for the glycine site of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor. D-serine is formed L-serine by serine racemase, and 3-phosphogly-cerate dehydrogenase (3-PHGDH) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme of L-serine biosynthesis. PHGDH gene is located on chromosome Ipl2, and its functions are various: PHGDH activity, electron carrier activity, brain development, and cofactor binding (De Koning, 2006)
