In this final issue of Public Health for 2011, we are very pleased to be devoting the whole issue of the journal to the subject of legislative approaches to preventing and treating cancer and its consequences. The papers which we present to you are all based on material first presented at two conferences organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) which took place during 2010. The first, organised in conjunction with University of Sydney Law School was Legislate, Regulate, Litigate? Legal Perspectives on Cancer Prevention and Treatment and the second was a UICC sponsored session at the 2010 World Cancer Congress in Shenzhen in China. We will leave it to the Guest Editorial by Gostin, Liberman, Magnusson and Studdert1 to set the international context and explore the background to the papers selected more fully. However, we felt it appropriate that we - as Editors in Chief of the journal -comment on one aspect of the issue. Why publish these papers in a general journal such as Public Health?
