Elder mistreatment (EM) is an important public health issue. The World Health Organization has declared that EM is a human rights violation, as a person's most basic fundamental right is to be safe and free of violence. In addition, prior studies indicate EM is associated with significant morbidity and mortality; yet, we still have rudimentary knowledge about this pervasive global public health issue. The U.S. National Research Council suggests that rigorous research is needed in all aspects of EM. Unfortunately, our current understanding of the racial/ethnic differences in EM is limited, especially among the Chinese population.
