ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti spent more than six months on board of the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Expeditions 42 and 43 in the FUTURA mission provided by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Her main tasks were to run scientific experiments that cannot be performed on Earth and to maintain the microgravity laboratory that has been her "home". These experiments have required the development and validation of special instrumentation that has been delivered on board of the ISS after a rigorous 'safety review process', set of activities under the domain of Product & Quality Assurance disciplines, performed to comply with system safety requirements established by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This paper describes the process implemented to assess the safety of the payloads which have been developed by the scientific and industrial Italian community in the frame of FUTURA mission, taking as example one of the 8 experiments successful completed by Samantha on board of the ISS.
