POTATO VIRUS Y (PVY), also referred to as common mosaic virus of potato, is a serious, seed-borne disease of potatoes. Management of the disease for seed producers is challenging, to say the least, since the virus is spread through the activity of non-colonizing aphids. Since the aphids that spread the virus almost always begin to show up while the seed potato crop is still green, and are very difficult to manage, the most effective means known for management of PVY is to plant seed with zero or very low levels of PVY in the first place. One of the ways these low initial inoculum levels can be achieved is through an effective seed certification program.
