There is growing confidence on EU potato markets and this is reflected in steady to rising physical market prices and firmer April 2006 contract futures market prices. In many cases, this year's price trend is mirroring that of 2003. This is partly due to the fact that heavy rain in many of the key growing areas in recent days has hampered liftings and limited supplies reaching the market. But there is also concern over yields and - particularly - quality. Time is now running out for table potatoes although there could still be some improvement in crops for processing and starch. Early season price quotations put Germany firmly at the bottom of the EU league table. Portuguese crops have been hit by drought but potato prices have been surprisingly poor so far. Polish potato prices are well up on last year and demand for crisps ('chips') is said to be buoyant. Seed potato yields in the north of the country have however been hit by drought. The Romanian growing season has also been problematic; a yield reduction could cancel a reported increase in plantings. Forestry is becoming a remunerative alternative to crops such as potatoes in the Czech Republic, while Israel reports that the Gaza pullout will not affect potato exports. Small French producerslast week promoted direct sales of their potatoes in Paris, in protest at the low prices being offered by retailers. There have been rumours that French retail giant Carre/our has been in negotiation with Wal-Mart. Problems are intensifying for Australian growers of processing potatoes and the country is to introduce country-of-origin labelling for fresh fruit and vegetables. Austrian starch company Agrana is to increase its potato usage this season.
