Lean is a set of principles and a quality improvement ideology developed by the Toyota Motor Company. Though lean methodology has been applied in manufacturing the present article illustrates how it has been effective in effective in healthcare. The article reports how lean transformation at ThedaCare, an integrated healthcare delivery system in Wisconsin with five hospitals and 27 physician clinics, improved not only quality but also every aspect of the patient experience while delivering improved quality, lower cost, and improved staff morale.
