It has been reported that through the use of TQM the adoption of workplace organization approach called 5S has gained momentum. 5S refers to the method of installing and maintaining a clean, effective and quality workplace. Started in Japan, 5S induces motivation and involvement in the organization. By applying 5S, all activities of the organization, such as production, engineering services, quality control etc can be improved. Some companies add safety as the sixth step. However some studies indicate that such an addition can only cause confusion. TQM management needs to place more importance to safety so that safety can be ensured in all areas of operations. This study examines the possibility of including safety as the 6~(th) S in the methodology of the existing 5S in a high-risk manufacturing environment and develops a method for inclusion of safety in 5S. The objectives of this study are to find justification for inclusion of safety is 5S, to provide a framework to make safety as an integral part of 5S, to provide an audit method for safety included 5S called 6S, and to evaluate the success implementation.
