Designing academic audit: Lessons learned in Europe and Asia

In the context of academic quality assurance (AQA) in higher education, the three modal forms are in vogue, i.e., institutional accreditation, subject assessment and academic audit. These have different strengths and weaknesses. Academic audits (AAs) are, however, focused on the specific processes by which academic institutions assure academic standards and improve the quality of their teaching and learning.Several countries, like the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Sweden, Hong Kong, and the CRE implemented AAs in their own way and faced several problems. This article reviews and summarizes the varied experience of these countries.During the review, the article presents 12 lessons learned during the implementation of AAs. These lessons are useful as guidelines for the design and implementation of an effective audit process.The article concludes that academic audit is a relevant approach to academic accountability by:Clarifying each institution's corporate responsibility for assuring and improving the quality of teaching and student learning.Focusing institutional attention on the academic processes by which academic standards are maintained and academic programs are improved.Encouraging institutional dissemination of information on best practices in AQA.
