In the last two decades of the 20th century,the economic playing field changed drastically.Quality switched from being what distinguished a firm from the competitors to the ante required just to play in the game.Quality has a new meaning in the 21st century.This century,with its global orientation,has introduced another set of stakeholders that has as much impact on the success as the customers do.Where quality was the watchword of the 20th century,in the 21st century,the watchword will be sustainability,which is presented in this article.(2 refs.)
