Updating our TQM thinking for a knowledge and service economy

摘要

A series of knowledge revolutions in fields like information and communication technologies (ICT), genetic engineering, ecology, long cycle systems, smart materials, and nanotechnology, are driving rapid changes in a globalizing economy. These new style knowledge tools are in turn creating new types of activities, jobs, relationships and challenges. This paper covers a wide scope of analyses to illustrate the challenges facing TQM (total quality management) in remaining central and relevant to a modern economy. The analysis of history of current methodologies and frameworks highlights that they lie too heavily within a manufacturing derived logic. The analogy of the accounting profession is cited to suggest that an important first step is a 'no holds barred' analysis and discussion of limitations. The author presents some initial frameworks, which seem capable of carrying current TQM thinking forward into an information and service economy driven by new knowledge technologies.
