It is discussed in brief about the use of loss function approach for assessing the process performance. Later, the concept of expected relative squared error loss is used to study the processes with symmetric tolerances. As this approach does not perform well as expected for the process with asymmetric tolerances, the loss index is modified to suit such cased. Since the use of the traditional frequentist approach is not effective when the distribution of the modified relative loss index, it is attempted to propose an alternative Bayesian approach that is more effective in assessing the process performance based on the loss index for the processes with asymmetric tolerances. An example is also given to illustrate the application of the procedure. (21 refs.)
