Purpose: To test t-charts for implementation in short production runs to monitor the process mean and to evaluate their statistical properties. Summary: Owing to the limited number of possible inspections during a short run, often a Phase I control chart cannot be drawn for providing estimates of population mean and standard deviation. Recently, t-charts have been proposed by Zhang et al (Ref. 2) to protect against errors in standard deviation estimation errors due to limitation of available measures. The article considers measures properly designed to test chart sensitivity during short runs to compare Shewhart and EWMA t-charts. Two initial setup conditions for short run fixing the population mean exactly equal to the target, or alternatively, introducing an initial setup error influencing the statistic distribution are modeled. The numerical study considers several out-of-control process conditions including one-step shifts for mean and/or standard deviation. The results show that t-charts can be successfully implemented to monitor a short run. An illustrative example is included. (16 refs.)
