Purpose: To perform a systematic literature review of software quality cost research based on the publications in leading journals. Summary: It is discussed that over the years, quality has emerged to be a key issue in software development. Notwithstanding, software quality costs have not received as much attention from the research community as other economic aspects of software development. However, though there have been a number of publications on the topic software quality costs, it is observed that comprehensive overviews of this body of research are not available. Therefore, in this paper authors have attempted to perform a systematic literature review of software quality cost research by going through the relevant publications in leading journals. In fact, the literature review is done based on specific research questions. This paper included the studies related to prevention costs, appraisal costs, failure costs and their combinations. The results are discussed from the perspective of the proposed research questions.
