The nuclear weapons design agency laboratories namely, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia National Laboratories of the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) annually assess the safety, performance, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. These assessments are based on observations and tests performed on a sample of nuclear weapons and their components. In 2009, these laboratories were assigned by NNSA the task of developing a quantitative methodology to assess the SP and the methodology is presented in this article. (4 refs.)
