The appeal of the X~2 chart rests in its simplicity and ability to detect large shifts in mean vector quickly. But it is not sensitive to small shifts in the mean. This may be overcome if the decision is based on several successive points plotted on a reduced DCL, for example, incorporating runs rules. But this may cause a delay in detecting larger shifts. The present article proposes combined rules which enable quick detection of larger shifts without reducing the speed of detecting the smaller ones. (7 refs.)
