Developing new products is an activity in which most groups in an organization are involved, though primarily it is a technical function of R&D personnel. Product development (PD) is a must to sustain in business by regularly introducing new products. Traditionally PD is not concerned with process structures as they reduce creativity. However, letting the most important function of the organization, namely R&D, go on randomly is not an efficient management approach so many management concepts are being incorporated in PD. One concept that helps translate customer needs to new products is design for Six Sigma (DFSS). In the operational PD level, it is difficult to convert the entire concept by co-workers. It has been postulated that DFSS positively affects PD. The purpose of this study is to examine which parts of DFSS are adopted while implementing it in PD. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with eight stake holders namely, method experts and technical managers, of the PD processes at four case study organizations. DFSS core values were the contents of the framework of the interview material. (42 refs.)
