The following introductory comments set the focus for the problem background: ·In certain biological tests,the statistical significance of the difference between treatment means fails to demonstrate a meaningful result. ·This could be because of the innate biological variation in the characteristic being studied. ·By way of an example,the body weight of a person may differ by about half a kilogram from day to day under normal physiological conditions;this fact should be considered in assessing weight control programs;declaring weight change of less than half a kilogram as statistically significant may lead to a paradoxical result.(Other examples could include biochemical indicators of nutritional status,daily nutrient intakes or absorption of micronutrients). Assuming common unknown variance for the three groups (i.e., control and two treatments) and the width of the interval of intra-individual variation as known,the distribution of the appropriate test statistic is shown as noncentral t.The paper provides a method of statistical testing forα=0.05 and illustrates the method with two earlier published examples of: ·C1:Zinc absorption in mice for two cereal diets with control. ·C2:Testing the differences between serum vitamin A levels in children.
