摘要

NUMMI, a Toyota subsidiary, could attain simultaneously superior efficiency and superior flexibility, confronting an enduring postulate of organization theory of a tradeoff between efficiency and flexibility.The authors analyze two recent major changes in NUMMI to further the understanding on the ways to overcome the obstacles for flexibility/efficiency. They find that NUMMI used four mechanisms to support its exceptional flexibility/efficiency combination.Metaroutines.Job enriching.Switching.Partitioning.The success with these four mechanisms depended on several organizational features, most notably training, trust and leadership.
