摘要

The development of a special status of managers can more adequately be interpreted as a construction. To explain this construct, three principal types of approaches have been identified and reviewed in view of management:·Technical.·Elite.·Political.Each of these approaches is able to offer a distinctive account of the recent trends in management, viz., organizational change programs and the concept of empowerment which are suggestive of the demise of management, especially middle management. The paper argues that welcoming the demise of management is problematic both in its ahistoricity and in its tendency to reduce the diversity of human activity to the discourse of management and manageability.
