Measurement error (ME) is caused by measuring instruments and the systems QS 9000 and ISOI TS 16949 have defined gauge capability acceptable criteria based on PIT value. However, instruments with accuracy degeneration are common in reliability engineering. This renders PIT value inadequate. In this setting, a modified index PIT* is proposed to judge gauge capability along with its estimator for the case where a part can be measured only once and only one instrument is used. (18 refs.)
