摘要

Purpose: To discuss the concept of system health assessment, illustrate its application with examples and describe the tools that are useful for system health management. Summary: It is discussed about the important of having systems that are operationally ready with high reliability and availability. This is expected to minimize life cycle cost, implying reduced inspections, maintenance and logistic support. In this regard, it is observed as important to make use of the measures of system health to determine needs for preventive and corrective maintenance to optimize maintenance scheduling and parts stocking, and to forecast when the system sill reach the end of its useful life. An emerging paradigm to address the challenge is observed as prognostics and health management (PHM) that imparts all necessary support. By presenting system health and strategy for how it is to be measured as part of system health assessment (SHA) as the two components of PHM, in this article the system health is discussed as a general concept and its application is illustrated with examples. The use of system health metrics, a part of SHA program that can facilitate PHM is discussed. Further, the challenges in using statistical methods for system health maintenance are also discussed.
