Theoretical developments in sampling have often run ahead of computational capabilities. In fact, 100 years ago it was the requirements of statisticians that spurred on technological development for computing. However, now it is the reverse case that survey statisticians are the followers of computing technology.The article presents the history of sampling over the twentieth century as the history of the interplay between ideas that have been put into practice and computing technology, commencing with two breakthroughs:1. Kailer's espousal of sampling through a representative model.2. The development of punch card machines for data processing by Hollerith at the end of the nineteenth century.The role of digital computers, scientific programming, and software packages in survey methodology and data analyses is presented.
