Purpose:To propose a method of monitoring the performance of industrial control systems, and a new historical-data benchmark index (IM) that can discern between perturbations in the system's core modules.Summary:Control loops have controllers that collect information and produce actions at the level of manipulated variables, in an autonomous way, following some control law previously programmed based on the dynamic behavior of the elements to be controlled. Control performance degradation can arise from a number of different sources, namely changes in the operation range. This can be caused by modifications of the dynamic features of the process in open loop. Open-loop stands for the process operating without feedback control, whereas the term closed-loop refers to the process operating under control, where there is a link from its outputs to its inputs, forming a closed cycle of information flow-variation in the products/materials/equipment being used and various other external factors. Hence it is necessary to have methodologies for the assessment and monitoring of the performance of control loops which is normally referred to as control performance assessment/monitoring (CPA/CPM) where CPA is focused on computing a quantity that reflects the level of performance of a given controller, CPM is essentially centered in following it over time and detect any unusual trends in the performance. The paper presents an approach based on multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) method using historical data based bench marking. (25 refs.)
