The North American newsprint market is "surprisingly quiet" this month, contacts said recently, with buyers and sellers adopting a wait-and-see approach to both capacity and pricing levels. This is attributed in part to producers' offsetting a stagnant domestic market with increased offshore exports. Another factor is the 360,000 tonnes/yr of US newsprint capacity closures so far this year and upcoming shut of another 213,000 tonnes at the DeRidder, LA, mill in September, which has raised producer hopes for a price increase.
