The nine-month slide in US newsprint pric^ es appeared to be petering out in August, sources said, leading some contacts to speculate that the downtrend may be ending. "We don't finalize negotiations until the end of the month so we won't know for sure until then but at this point we haven't moved anything," a newsprint mill contact in the East said. "The large chunk dumping of price from month to month seems to be over, and its $5 a tonne here and $5 a tonne there. We are probably at the bottom unless the loonie goes down to 72 cents or lower," another contact in the East said.
