The showdown has arrived over the 60/ton containerboard price hike scheduled for early October in North America. On one side are box buyers and independent converters strongly resisting the increase in the face of what could be a major economic downturn, possibly the worst since the Depression. On the other side are large integrated producers aggressively trying to push the price hike through using the lever of reduced supply in a more, consolidated market following International Paper's (IP) acquisition of Weyerhaeuser's containerboard assets in August.
