Chromates have been used for corrosion protection in industry for decades, however, due to their high toxicity they will be in the near future definitively banned. Before replacement, the performances of the alternatives have to be evaluated. Currently in the industry, accelerated ageing tests are used for corrosion protection evaluation. Unfortunately, these tests do no give any information about the corrosion protection mechanisms. Therefore, electrochemical techniques are used in this study. The corrosion protection mechanism of 3 commercial chrome free inhibitors on HDG steel corrosion was investigated in a 0.1M NaCl solution. The efficiency of the different inhibitors on the generalized corrosion of the HDG steel surface was evaluated by means of classical electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)). The influence of the inhibitors on the cut edge corrosion of HDG steel was investigated in a sodium chloride solution by the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET).
