The burgeoning export market for U.S. steam coal is beginning to catch the attention of U.S. utility buyers, it seems. They might not yet be nervous about the potential impact on domestic pricing if the overseas market strength is sustained, but buyers at home no doubt are monitoring the situation as their coal inventories decline. Stockpiles are still at comfortable levels for many utilities, but futures pricing for NYMEX-type coal is gaining momentum, and buyers are said to be talking about multi-year deals for security of supply.
