A novel approach examines evidence of alteration to establish intact forests.Assessing forest degradation atthe regional and global scalesis difficult for various reasons. Degradation is a complex concept that is difficult to define. As such, and in addition, it is difficult, and expensive, to measure. What little information is available is often inadequate, lacking in detail, richness and consistency, particularly across jurisdictional boundaries. Non-productive aspects such as biodiversity tend to be particularly poorly described.
