摘要

The notion of exercise dependence suggests that individuals who work out can develop a need to engage in this activity such that they may experience psychological and physiological effects if they reduce or withdraw from it. This phenomenon is beginning to get more attention in the literature, as it may relate to eating disordered behavior. The present study evaluated 80 female college students to determine if there were differences between athletes, non-athletes who exercised frequently, and non-athletes who did not exercise frequently in terms of their endorsement of exercise dependent traits. We found that athletes exercise more than non-athletes and also showed more tension, anger, and fatigue pre-deprivation. Athletes endorsed more signs of exercise dependence. However, after an exercise deprivation period of 36 hours. it was found that there were no differences between athletes, non-athlete high-exercisers and non-athlete low exercisers in their mood states.
