摘要

Owing to its portability and real-time capability, ultrasound is extremely well suited for evaluating patients who present to the emergency department. With ultrasound, one can address and often answer a focused clinical question in a timely manner. This is invaluable in unstable trauma settings where patients cannot be transported from their rooms. The superficial location of tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and superficial soft tissues of the extremities lends itself to sonographic imaging. Other musculoskeletal applications of ultrasound in the emergency department include evaluating for fluid collections, detecting soft tissue foreign bodies, particularly radiolucent ones, and, in certain instances, diagnosing bony fractures.
