摘要

Nonmedical ultrasound, also known as entertainment or keepsake ultrasound, is, as the name clearly indicates, the performance of obstetrical ultrasound with no medical indication but to provide the mother/parents to be with images or video clips of the fetus (on hard copy, tape, CD or DVD), also called "scanning for pleasure" (Chudleigh 1999). One of the most important issues to be addressed is that of safety of ultrasound and risk to the fetus. From a safety standpoint, who is right? On the one hand, commercial entities assure their customers that ultrasound is completely without risks. On the websites of several of these, one can read statements such as: "There has never been a harmful effect shown by the use of ultrasound. Many women have multiple ultrasounds during pregnancy with no negative effect on the baby." (First Look Sonogram 2002) or: "Extensive studies over 30 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby." (Americanpregnancy.org 2000) or: "Thousands of studies have been conducted. Nothing has surfaced yet that indicates any harmful effects in the use of ultrasound on animals or on humans." (Baby's First Images 2009) and: "...ultrasound has been monitored by the government for over 35 years and if it were not safe, hospitals, clinics and facilities like ours would not be allowed to use the equipment" (Fetal Fotos 2002). One site names benefits in addition to absence of risk: "Several studies have verified that it is a noninvasive tool with vast benefits... studies confirm that no adverse findings of diagnostic ultrasound levels have ever been replicated. In fact, new studies are showing its psycho-social benefit for expecting women..." (Geddes Keepsake Prenatal 2002). On the other hand, the Food and Drug Agency (FDA) is strongly opposed, stating: "...ultrasound energy delivered to the fetus cannot be regarded as completely innocuous. Laboratory studies have shown that diagnostic levels of ultrasound can produ...
