Psychotherapy was born 50 years ago, at a time when the anxiety of the Cuban missile crisis was still fresh in the psyche of the nation. Despite emerging from the danger of nuclear war at the end of 1962, 1963 began with a sense of optimism. Perhaps this was no better personified than the rags-to-riches story of the Clampetts on The Beverly Hillbillies, the most popular TV show that year. Life seemed to imitate art, as both Sonny Liston (boxing) and Elizabeth Taylor (Cleopatra) earned 1 million dollar paydays that year, record breaking in each of their professions at the time. Likewise, the imagery of summer is a good elixir for collective angst, and so it would seem predestined that Surf City by Jan & Dean would top the Billboard charts.
