Solar scaremongers had reason to take flight earlier this year when images of fried birds at solar parks in the U.S. hit the headlines. But solar's role in avian mortality is nothing to get in a flap about, as pv magazine discovered. A photo of a small dead bird with its feathers melted away made the rounds on the internet in late August 2014, published by a wide variety of publications. This image, variations on the verb "incinerate," and claims that the facility is killing as many as 28,000 birds annually have shaped the impression that many Americans now have of the Ivanpah Solar Energy Generating Systems. This media frenzy can be largely traced to an Associated Press story that went viral, with publications citing other publications out of context in the rumor mill that passes for news coverage. The actual number of 28,380 is based on the testimony of consultant Dr. K. Shawn Small- wood, a biologist known for his high estimates of fatalities at wind farms. Smallwood was hired by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), which has been involved in regulatory decisions around many large solar projects. Brightsource Energy, which developed the technology at Ivanpah, will point out that there are only 321 recorded bird deaths in six months at the facility, and solar advocates note that even higher estimates are negligible compared to other man-made causes of bird deaths. However, it is the image of singed birds, rather than these reasoned arguments, that are most likely to remain seared into most Americans' consciousness.
