A number of synthetic ionchannels have been reported in recentyears that incorporate unusual or so-phisticated design elements. The pres-ent work demonstrates that extremelysimple compounds can function, as ionchannels (insert in bilayers, exhibitopen–close behavior) if they meet min-imum criteria. A simple membranespanning structure may function as a channel if 1) it possesses polar head-groups (is bolaamphiphilic), 2) possess-es a "central relay," and 3) channelfunction (open–close behavior) mustbe detected after insertion of the am-phiphile directly into the aqueous lipo-somal or cellular suspension. We showhere compounds that are simple spansto which we have given the name"aplosspan" (from the Greek απλσσ +span) that meet these criteria. They aresimilar to, but simpler than, structuresreported in the literatures that incorpo-rate more complex design features.
