Cucurbit[n]urils (CBn, in which n=5–10)~[1–7] and cyclodextrins CDs)~[8–10] are two different kinds of host molecules that have attracted great attention in recent years for their special structures and for applications involving interactions with guest molecules. In particular, the specific inclusion of radical cations into the cavity of CB7 and CB8 has been described by Kim and co-workers, who reported that the methyl viologen cation radical (MV~+') dimer is strongly stabilised following the formation of the inclusion complex CB8·(MV~+')2.~[11, 12] The inclusion complexation of diquat and paraquat by CB8 was instead investigated by Kaifer and coworkers, who found that one-electron reduction of diquat led to increased binding affinity with the macrocycle.~[13] Despite the many interesting studies involving CB8 and persistent radicals, no information has yet been obtained on the inclusion of nitroxide radicals by CB8. Complexation of a sterically hindered nitroxide (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-N-oxyl, 1) and of benzyl tert-butyl nitroxide by CB7 in aqueous solution was instead reported in our previous paper.~[14] EPR spectroscopy was used to obtain evidence for the formation of the nitroxide·CB7 complex, both in the absence and in the presence of metal cations, on the basis of the large changes of the measured nitrogen hyperfine splitting, due to the different polar environment experienced by the included radical.
