摘要

To restate the objectives, this paper has sought to describe in basic detail, the characteristics of Queensland thermal coals, to compare these coals with those utilised overseas, and to give some detail on the issues and performance of these coals in Queensland power plants.Some of the main points from the paper are as follows:(i) The coals used in Queensland power stations are generally of poorer quality than the premium export coals currently traded, and include low volatile coals, and high volatile (low HGI coals).(ii) As a technology importer, Queensland power producers have given particular attention to gaining a better understanding of the characteristics of our coals, determining operating limits with given coals, and extending the operation of plants to coals considered outside the design range for the particular plant.(iii) The four key areas where research and development have been targeted to improve operations are mill throughput and turn-down, unburnt carbon in ash, NOx emissions, and ash deposition.(iv) Queensland power stations have maintained a reputation for high reliability, availability and thermal efficiency, despite the increased demands on plant arising from a deregulated electricity industry.
