To what extent will the global financial crisis affect farm incomes? Consumers are already watching their supermarket spend and turning to discount food stores as the credit crunch bites. While such retailers still have only a small share of the UK'sbillion food market, that share is growing rapidly and the premium end of the food market is expected to lose sales most swiftly. However, economists point out that, to some extent, farming may be less badly affected by the recession than many other small businesses. While consumer goods are an optional purchase, food is not. Much depends on the attitude and approach of the supermarkets to changing shopper habits in the credit crunch.
