Onboard UAVs can offer greatly enhanced ISTAR coverage for surface combatants, but the basic task of getting the aircraft off the deck into the air (and back again) remains a challenge. The defence sector is seeing a plethora of unmanned and aerial ISTAR assets entering the market in the maritime environment, with highlights including the US Navy's (USN's) Small Tactical UAS (STUAS), Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) and Naval ISR Services programmes, to name but a few. Whether they are tasked for counter-terrorism or counter-piracy, anti-submarine or surface warfare, communications intelligence or cargo resupply, a vital component of any of these operations is the platform's ability to integrate onto its host vessel.
