Treatment of tetramethylsuc-cinonitrile 1 with aryl lithium com-pounds and subsequent quenching withchlorotrimethylsilane yields 5-aryl-3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-N-(trimethy1sily1)-3,4-dihydropyrrol-2-imines 2 a–c in 49-71 % yield. Attempts to crystallise 2 a–cin the presence of wet air yielded thetetraaryl tetradecahydroporphyrazins3a–c in yields of 4-84% as single dia-stereomers. X-ray diffraction studies of3b and c showed that only the isomer with four aryl substituents pointing inthe same direction was formed. The re-sulting four-bladed pinwheel-like struc-tures were characterised by four intra-molecular aromatic interactions, inwhich each phenyl ring points with itsedge towards the centre of a neigh-bouring phenyl moiety, resembling thearrangement of benzene molecules inT-shaped dimers. Temperature-depen-dent NMR spectra give insight into thedynamic properties of the aryl substitu-ents. Quantum chemical calculationsthat included dispersion corrections in-dicated the importance of aryl–aryl in-teractions for the diastereoselectivityof the reaction and for the structuralproperties of the single isomers ob-served.
