TO THE EDITOR: The natural history of asymptomatic ureteral stones on the renal function is intriguing. The present study helps in understanding the natural history of silent ureteral stones with hydronephrosis. In this study, 27 (5.3%) of 506 met the criteria of a silent ureteral stone, but only 9 patients (1.7%) had a pre- and postoperatively docu' mented dimercaptosuccinic acid scan to measure the change in function of the renal unit. Also, among the 9 patients, 6 (66.67%) had a history of urologic disease, which in itself could have been a cause for the hydrone-phrosis and decreased renal function at presentation rather than the silent ureteral stone. Hence, we would need a cohort of patients diagnosed with nonurologic causes to really determine the true effect of silent ureteral stones on renal function.
