TO THE EDITOR: I have read with great interest the report by Bozkurt et al about relationship between the mean platelet volume (MPV) and varicocele published on-line in your journal. Although the data suggest the MPV levels were statistically significantly greater in varicocele group, a number of concerns exist related to the technological limitations and variations in the measurement methods of the MPV that need to be considered. The MPV is not reported as a routine part of the complete blood count because of the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-induced changes over time. When blood comes in contact with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, the platelets rapidly change shape from disks to spheroids covered with filamentous extensions. Within 1-2 hours, the platelet volume progressively changes.
